The Town of Abingdon is proud to announce the launch of “Traveling Back to Revolutionary Times,” an innovative historical initiative designed to bring the region’s Revolutionary War-era heritage to life through immersive storytelling, outdoor exploration, and cutting-edge technology.

This multi-phase project will introduce a series of historically grounded plaques installed at significant locations throughout Abingdon, each highlighting a key aspect of the town’s Revolutionary-era past. Crafted from durable, long-lasting materials, the plaques will feature short narratives alongside QR codes that unlock deeper digital content.
Initial installation sites include:

• The Muster Grounds, where Colonel William Campbell assembled his troops in 1780.
• Sinking Springs Cemetery, established in 1773, honoring the nine Revolutionary Patriots buried there.
• The Tavern, one of Abingdon’s most iconic structures, dating back to 1788.

The Tavern — Abingdon, Virginia.

A minimum of 7 sites will be included in the first rollout, with plans for additional locations as the project expands.

Complementing the physical installations is a free mobile application available on iOS and Android. This new platform will serve as a virtual tour guide, utilizing GPS navigation to lead users seamlessly from site to site. Visitors can scan each plaque’s QR code or open the app directly to access detailed historical narratives, primary-source insights, multimedia features, and interactive elements that deepen engagement.

The app also allows users to build personalized tours based on their interests and includes community features where they can share comments, reflections, and discussions with fellow history enthusiasts.
“Traveling Back to Revolutionary Times is more than a history trail, it’s a bridge between past and present,” said Gabe Cristofari “We want residents and visitors alike to experience Abingdon’s Revolutionary heritage in a way that is immersive, educational, and meaningful.”

By blending historic preservation with modern technology, this initiative aims to make Abingdon’s rich past more accessible to families, students, visitors, and lifelong learners. The project represents a major step forward in heritage tourism, with opportunities for ongoing expansion and community involvement.
The public is invited to experience the first phase of “Traveling Back to Revolutionary Times” in early 2026.
